ASTM Water Methods
Testing for chemical pollutants in sources of water such as wastewater, drinking water, ground water and other waterways is essential for the measurement, characterization and removal of hazardous chemicals as the presence of these chemicals can lead to serious health issues for both human and aquatic life. As a result, ASTM committee D19 on Water has developed test methods that focuses on the identification of different chemical contaminates in water such as Nitrosamines and Carbamates. Our products for Water methods below include CRMs for both the native and the labeled compounds required of calibration for each test method.
ASTM International has released the following LC/MS/MS water standards:
ASTM Methods
Method D7598 applies to Thiodiglycol, a compound used in the manufacture of chemical weapons, insecticides, inks, lubricants and pharmaceutical products. The Method has been designed for surface water analysis, and includes the target compound and surrogate standard.
ASTM Method D7599 describes the qualitative and quantitative analysis of ethanolamine compounds - Diethanolamine, Triethanolamine, N-methyldiethanolamine and N-ethyldiethanolamine in surface waters. These compounds are listed as Schedule 3 chemicals under the Chemical Weapons Convention due to their toxicity and other properties that could potentially render them components of chemical weapons. Other applications include the production of adhesives, detergents, inks, pesticides and pharmaceuticals.
ASTM Methods D7600 and D7645 apply to the analysis of carbamate pesticides in surface waters. The biological affect and residual risk of these compounds is on the nervous system through enzyme inhibition. However, residual levels of these compounds in water are unlikely to cause a cumulative effect in most aquifers.
Nitrosamines is a class of chemical compounds that are known for its carcinogenic effects. The accumulation of these chemical in wastewater pose a major contamination risk to other water resources such as drinking water and ground water. ASTM Method D8456 is for the determination of Nitrosamines in Wastewater by LC-MS/MS.
