Cannabis Testing by Type
There are different cultivars of cannabis plants that are used in various ways. Plants that have been bred to have higher THC content are used for medicinal and recreational uses. Those bred to have lower THC levels can be used for hemp production. Hemp is a crop that is harvested for the fibers of the plant and can be used to make clothing, paper, and other products. Currently USDA regulations stipulate hemp crops must be below 0.3% w/w for total delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (considering both THC and THCA) on a dry weight basis of the sample.
Testing Cannabinoids? AccuStandard offers Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for cannabinoid potency testing. Cannabinoids such as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), Cannabidiol (CBD), Cannabigerol (CBG), and their derivatives are the primary active ingredients responsible for the psychoactive and medicinal effects of cannabis products. Every cannabis plant has differing amounts of these compounds occurring naturally. Different cannabinoids are responsible for different physiological effects.
AccuStandard has created standards to test for Residual Solvents specifically for the Cannabis industry. Solvents such as butane, ethyl acetate, or ethanol are used to extract the active ingredients and flavor chemicals from the cannabis buds. After extraction it is important that these solvents be removed from the consumer product to ensure no toxic residuals of these solvents remain.
AccuStandard offers standards to test for Terpenes in Cannabis. Terpenes, for example linalool and α-Pinene, are the chemicals found in the aromatic oils that give different strains their distinct flavor profile. These standards can be used to determine the specific flavor profile and help with identifying the strain of the product.
Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) are a group of chemical compounds that have been evaluated for their possible role in enhancing cannabis products flavor and aroma. These CRMs are designed to help test for traces of VSCs in cannabis to help investigate that role and its potential therapeutic advantages.
Pesticides are used in most agricultural settings. The cultivation of cannabis is no different. Many of these pesticides can be dangerous to human health. An additional concern is that these chemicals can be concentrated along with the active ingredients during extraction. Most states regulate the amount of pesticide residue that can be present in consumer cannabis products. Different categories such as pyrethroids and organophospates are commonly used and regulated. For example, Azadirachtin is a pesticide derived from Neem oil that is commonly used as an "organic pesticide" but may cause health issues in cannabis consumers.
Cannabis easily uptakes heavy metals like cadmium, mercury and lead from the soil in which it is grown. Additionally, metal contamination like chromium or nickel from processing equipment can be introduced into the consumable product. Therefore testing for these and other metals is critical to assure the safety of the final product for the consumer. AccuStandard offers Heavy Metal Standards for Cannabis testing purposes.
ASTM Methods
Our D-8399-SET includes all the target pesticides listed in ASTM Method D8399. Residue of these pesticides may still exist and even become concentrated after the extraction process. Exposure to some of these pesticides can result in major health risks such as nervous system damage, kidney problems, infertility, or cancer.
US Cannabis Reference Standards by State
Reducing exposure to pesticides from cannabis consumption is critical for the safety and health of consumers in both medicinal and recreational applications. States and local governments have established their own guidelines and requirements to screen for residual pesticides in cannabis.
The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) mandates pesticide testing by licensed cannabis laboratories. Colorado allows laboratories to use methods that are fit-for-purpose, including ASTM and AOAC methods.
