Allergens in Toys - EU Safety Directive 2009/48/EC

The EU Toys Safety Directive 2009/48/EC and its most recent revision which became effective on May 12th 2022, prohibits the use of 58 allergenic fragrances in toys and requires manufacturers to test for these chemicals in order to meet the EU toys safety standards.

Allergenic Fragrances Health Concerns

Fragrance chemicals added to children’s toys presents a health concern to consumers as some of those chemicals may cause harmful allergic reactions. Exposure to allergenic fragrances may lead to acute and chronic health issues such as allergic reactions, asthma, endocrine disruption and neurological disorders. This can particularly be dangerous for children at young ages as they tend to be more sensitive and vulnerable to these toxins.
