USEPA Takes Action on Organophosphate Pesticides

December 20th, 2023

Earlier this year, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) announced its expedited efforts to regulate the use of four organophosphate compounds widely used as insecticides. The USEPA is seeking early mitigation of: Diazinon (CAS# 33-41-5), Ethoprop (CAS# 13194-48-4), Tribufos (CAS# 78-48-8) and Phosmet (CAS# 732-11-6).

Organophosphates are a class of organic chemical compounds commonly used in both commercial agricultural and non-agricultural applications. In agriculture, organophosphates are applied to prevent insect growth on crops including fruits, vegetables, cotton, corn, soybeans and wheat. They are also found in household products used to treat homes and gardens for insects.

Known for neurotoxic effects, organophosphates’ mechanism of action is recognized by targeting the Central Nervous System and disrupting neurological activities. Sources of exposure for humans and wildlife are contaminated water sources and soil, as well as residual traces of these pesticides and their metabolites on treated crops or exposure to pesticide spray drift. Some organophosphates are also known for their reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption and as a possible cancer agent. See the USEPA's announcement for more details.

AccuStandard offers a comprehensive selection of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for USEPA 614, 622, 8141B, 1657, and ISO Method 10695. Quantification of these chemicals can be conducted by following these published and approved test methods through spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques such as LC-MS/MS, LC-MS and GC-MS.

Our experienced technical service team offers a quick custom quotation service to design CRMs tailored to your specific testing needs. We are committed to providing top-quality standards to make testing for organophosphates easy, efficient, and most importantly, accurate.
